Acid Reflux Disease Treatment Options

Sometimes, it's nice to know how the medication you are taking is working in your body to help you get relief from acid reflux disease. Many medications are used for similar conditions, but often work differently.

Keep in mind the term OTC (over the counter) means products you can buy without a prescription. Rx refers to products prescribed by a doctor. As your results may vary, please discuss treatment options with your doctor.

Antacids OTC Neutralize acid in the stomach Provide acute relief of symptoms, although limited for some people.
H2 Blockers
(e.g., ranitidine)
Both OTC and Rx Reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach For erosive esophagitis, prescription H2 Blockers reduce symptoms and promote esophageal healing. Do not limit acid production as much as PPIs.
PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors)(e.g., Prevacid) Both OTC and Rx Turn off acid-producing pumps in the stomach For erosive esophagitis, prescription PPIs provide symptom relief and promote esophageal healing.
Important Safety Information for Prevacid

If you suffer from persistent heartburn two or more days a week, despite treatment and diet changes, it could be acid reflux disease. Prescription Prevacid Capsules and Prevacid SoluTab (lansoprazole) Orally Disintegrating Tablets are used for the treatment of acid reflux disease including erosive esophagitis and for maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis. Individual results may vary. Most erosions heal in 4–8 weeks. You should not take Prevacid if you are allergic to Prevacid or any of its ingredients. Prevacid may not be right for everyone and has a low occurrence of side effects in adults including diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and constipation. Symptom relief does not rule out other serious stomach conditions. Before taking Prevacid, tell your doctor if you are taking ampicillin, atazanavir, digoxin, iron, ketoconazole or warfarin. Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider to see if Prevacid is right for you.

Please see the accompanying Complete Prescribing Information for more information and talk to your healthcare provider.
