How Prevacid Works

Prevacid is a type of medication called a proton pump inhibitor, commonly known as a PPI.

There are cells in the lining of your stomach that contain pumps which produce the acid your body uses during digestion. The burning pain from acid reflux disease is caused when this stomach acid backs up, or refluxes, into the esophagus. Prevacid is a proton pump inhibitor, which helps prevent stomach acid production by turning off many of the acid-producing pumps. In doing so, Prevacid helps reduce the amount of stomach acid backing up into your esophagus.

For many people, taking one dose of Prevacid a day can relieve heartburn and many other symptoms related to acid reflux disease for up to 24 hours. Prevacid also helps heal damage the acid may have caused to your esophagus, known as erosive esophagitis. Continuing to take Prevacid, if prescribed, can maintain healing of the damage caused by acid reflux disease so that damage doesn't recur. Your results may vary.

Important Safety Information for Prevacid

If you suffer from persistent heartburn two or more days a week, despite treatment and diet changes, it could be acid reflux disease. Prescription Prevacid Capsules and Prevacid SoluTabTM (lansoprazole) Orally Disintegrating Tablets are used for the treatment of acid reflux disease including erosive esophagitis and for maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis. Your results may vary. Most erosions heal in 4–8 weeks. Prevacid may not be right for everyone and has a low occurrence of side effects such as diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea. Symptom relief does not rule out other serious stomach conditions. Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional to see if Prevacid is right for you. Prevacid products should not be crushed or chewed.
