Common Questions

What is acid reflux disease?
Acid reflux disease is a condition that occurs when stomach acid used for digestion repeatedly backs up, or refluxes, into the esophagus.

Can I have acid reflux disease and not have heartburn?
Yes. Although heartburn is the most common symptom, many other symptoms are also associated with acid reflux disease.

Does everyone have the same trigger foods?
No. Foods and beverages affect people differently, so learning which foods bother you is an important way to manage your condition. Continuing to avoid your trigger foods and eating frequent small meals are two changes that can help reduce symptoms.

Does Prevacid block all acid production in my stomach?
No. Stomach acid is used for digestion. Prevacid blocks many of the tiny pumps that produce acid in the stomach.

What damage occurs with acid reflux disease?
The lining of your esophagus can be damaged. However, the disease is complex and has many degrees of severity, ranging from just symptoms to erosions in your esophagus (erosive esophagitis).

How effective is Prevacid at healing?
Although healing takes time, up to 95% of patients with erosive esophagitis taking Prevacid were healed by their 8th week of treatment. Your results may vary.

Will damage from my acid reflux disease come back?
Without treatment, up to 87% of patients may have a relapse and suffer damage to the esophagus again within one year.

Important Safety Information for Prevacid

If you suffer from persistent heartburn two or more days a week, despite treatment and diet changes, it could be acid reflux disease. Prescription Prevacid Capsules and Prevacid SoluTabTM (lansoprazole) Orally Disintegrating Tablets are used for the treatment of acid reflux disease including erosive esophagitis and for maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis. Your results may vary. Most erosions heal in 4–8 weeks. Prevacid may not be right for everyone and has a low occurrence of side effects such as diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea. Symptom relief does not rule out other serious stomach conditions. Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional to see if Prevacid is right for you. Prevacid products should not be crushed or chewed.
