Diagnosing Acid Reflux Disease
Visiting with your doctor is the only way to diagnose
acid reflux disease. Your doctor will want to talk to you about your symptoms, diet and lifestyle. He or she may even want to conduct tests.
Your doctor may use any of the following tests to help diagnose your condition:
Esophageal pH measures the acidity of your esophagus over a 24-hour period. Acid in your esophagus can be elevated if stomach acid comes up repeatedly into your esophagus.
Upper Endoscopy is one of the best diagnostic tools that gastroenterologists have to examine the inside of your upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Using upper GI endoscopy, your doctor can directly visualize and take pictures of the inside of your GI tract using a tiny fiber-optic camera. This procedure can also be used to remove objects or tissue.
Esophageal manometry records pressure within the esophagus and the lower esophageal sphincter also known as the LES. A tube is inserted into the esophagus that measures the pressure. This test helps determine swallowing disorders.
Upper GI Series is a common test that uses x-rays to help spot abnormalities such as a hiatal hernia or severe inflammation of the esophagus. With this test, you drink a solution and then x-rays are taken. This test can show a narrowing of the esophagus called a stricture, an
ulcer, hiatal hernia and other problems.
