Duodenal Ulcers
Millions of people have duodenal ulcers. Men and women of any age can get them.
Ulcers tend to feel like a burning or gnawing pain in the abdomen. This pain is sometimes accompanied by a bloated feeling. Nausea may also occur.
What Causes Duodenal Ulcers? At one time, people believed stress, spicy foods, and family history played a major role in the cause of duodenal ulcers. However, this has not been conclusively proven.
What has been proven is the fact that bacteria called
H. pylori (
Helicobacter pylori) are found in up to 90% of patients with duodenal ulcers and are believed to be a major cause of these ulcers. Ulcers can be a recurring problem and can return within one year after healing. But if
H. pylori is eliminated, the chances that a duodenal ulcer will recur are greatly reduced.
